Beautiful Celle

Celle with about 74.000 inhabitants is one of the finest towns with timber-framed houses in Germany and you can discover numerous remarkable buildings, streets and squares, as well as art, culture and trade.
Celle is also famous for the stallion parade of the Stud Farm of Lower Saxony taking place annually at the end of September/beginnig of October. Lots of great horses have come from there.
The historical heart of the old town with different pedestrian precincts has more than 480 restored timber-framed houses built in the 16th and 18th centuries.
The highlight and absolute must for every visitor is the Duke’s Palace, which is the oldest building of Celle. It was first mentioned in 1318 as castrum and its oldest parts originate from the second half of the 13th century. Among other things you can find the oldest baroque theatre of Germany still performing.
The Bomann Museum directly opposite the Palace is one of the finest and biggest regional museums of northern Germany. Among other things you can see pieces of the history of civilisation of Lower Saxony and the history of the town and country.
A favourite place to stay is the French Garden, which was famous far and wide as a wonder garden in the 16th century. The alley leads to a monument of white marble, the memorial of the Danish queen, Caroline Mathilde, dedicated to her by the Knights of Luneburg in 1794.
Another jewel and popular object for photographies is the so called Pleasure Seat next to the Bee Institute. It was built in 1611.
